Communication Towers (3 of 11)

Tower Facts

Name:

Fernsehturm Berlin

Location:

Berlin, Germany

Height:

368 m (1207 ft)

Constructed:

1965 - 1969

Architects:

Fritz Dieter/Günter Franke/Werner Ahrendt

Notes on Visits:

In the late 1990's this tower was refurbished. This does not come as much of a surprise as I happened to visit the observation deck during a backpacking trip around Europe in 1994. The interior decor was horrendous and looked like a film set from the TV series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. The ticket desk was marked by an array of loose wires hanging from the ceiling and quite frankly appeared to be a health and safety risk. It therefore also comes as no surprise for the newcomer to Berlin reading this that it was built in former communist East Berlin. Secret Police and Tourist alike, the tower makes for excellent panoramic views of the centre of Berlin and beyond. Consequently, it attracts around one million visitors a year.
