Dream Sculpture, Sutton Manor, England
The Dream Sculpture is a public art installation located on the former site of Sutton Manor Colliery in St Helens, England. It was created by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa and unveiled in 2009. The sculpture consists of a 66 foot (20m) high white concrete bust of a young girl with her eyes closed, representing the aspirations and dreams of the local community.
The sculpture is visible from the M62 motorway and has become a landmark for the region. The Dream Sculpture was funded by the Big Art Project, a Channel 4 initiative that aimed to create iconic artworks across the UK. The design was chosen by a panel of local residents, former miners and art experts, who wanted to create a positive and inspiring symbol for the area. The sculpture is made of pre-cast concrete and coated with Spanish dolomite, a type of marble that gives it a bright and smooth appearance.
The Dream Sculpture has received various awards and recognitions, such as the Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture in 2010 and the Civic Trust Award in 2011.
